Schools and Training to Become a Carpenter

A high school diploma or GED is commonly required to become a carpenter, however, most training happens on the job through either a structured apprenticeship program or just helping a trained professional — a more senior carpenter. Drafting, millrite and shop classes are helpful, and an associates degree in carpentry can be an important asset. Keep in mind carpenters should be at least 16-18 years of age to start this profession and must finish 6,000 hours to receive a universally acknowledged “Apprenticeship.”
