How to Become a Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor
The path to becoming an addiction therapist will vary based upon the desired career path of the individual. Often, it is recommended to have the minimum of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or another related field, providing a foundation for the understanding of theory and practice of mental health and other clinical professions related to the field of addiction therapy.
Upon the successful completion of an undergraduate degree, to become licensed, a student must complete either a master’s degree, doctorate or a medical degree, depending on the chosen career path of the individual as well as the specific state requirements for licensing and practicing measures. At this stage, the student will choose their specialty, and complete further specific addiction therapy techniques and therapies in their chosen field. A student addiction therapist is also required to complete a set number of hours gaining experience within a clinic or other mental health facility.
Once an addiction therapist is fully qualified, they will be required to complete ongoing education each year to ensure they remain up to date in their knowledge.
