Become a Licensed Therapist in Psychotherapy
In order to become a psychotherapist specific higher education is required. At minimum, a prospective psychotherapist must complete an undergraduate degree in psychology or a closely related field. Once finished, the individual must begin a master’s degree in psychotherapy in order to gain both theory and practical experience in the field. This will be necessary to gain the clinical experience that is needed to become a fully licensed psychotherapist. In order to successfully complete a master’s degree, students will have to complete anywhere from 1,000-2,000 initial hours of practice and a further 1,500 hours of supervised experience upon completion of their master’s degree in order to become licensed.
Once psychotherapists are fully qualified, they will be required to complete ongoing education each year to ensure they remain up to date in their knowledge.
