How To Get Licensed As a Psychotherapist
To become a licensed psychotherapist, an individual must have completed both an undergraduate degree in psychotherapy or a closely related field and a master’s degree in psychotherapy. Within a master’s degree, a psychotherapy student is required to complete 2,000 – 4.000 hours of practical experience in the field. It is only when a student’s practical hours have been signed off, in conjunction with the successful completion of all theory-based components within the degree that psychotherapists can move on to the next steps of becoming licensed within their state.
Specific licensing regulations will vary depending on individual state requirements, so it is essential to conduct your own research. For most states, a psychotherapist will be required to sit a standardized clinical licensing exam in order to become a fully licensed practitioner.
