Get Licensed and Start Your Career As a Barber
Typically, to become a licensed barber, a student must successfully complete training in the form of education and/or an apprenticeship. This is to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to provide an up to standard service to the public before they may operate in a salon or own their own business. The Board of Barbering/Cosmetology (depending on the state) determines the needs to attain a license, such as a minimum number of hours in practice. Upon the successful completion of their training and completed hours, aspiring barbers must undertake and successfully pass a state license exam consisting of both theory and practical sections. Some states also have age restrictions in place for training and employment or require a high school education or the equivalent. Most states also require their barber to be at least 16 years old whilst others require 18 years old and over, so again, it is best to check your locality.
