Licensing Requirements
To become a licensed addiction therapist, an individual must have completed both a bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or another related field, and then go on to complete post-graduate studies, based upon the chosen field of interest (see more in training requirements). The state requirements for addiction therapists differs greatly, and ultimately depends on the type of service that a profession is attempting to offer. For most formal addiction therapy positions, the minimum of a bachelor’s degree is necessary.
For informal addiction therapy jobs such as motivational speakers, training may not be required. To gain licensure within most states, a professional must undertake a master’s degree in their chosen related field of addiction therapy. In order to gain a license to practice in some states, a professional is required to undertake several hours of supervised practice, and a specific number of hours completing theory-based practice. Specific licensing regulations will vary depending on individual state requirements, so it is essential for you to conduct your own research in your area.
