Licensing for Hypnotherapy Explained
To become a licensed hypnotherapist, an individual must have completed both a bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or another closely related field, and then go on to complete further post-graduate studies, based upon the chosen field of interest (see more in training requirements). Within the chosen post-graduate field of study, a hypnotherapy student is required to complete a set amount of specific clinical experience hours which will vary according to the state and chosen education path. It is only when a student’s practical hours have been signed off, in conjunction with the successful completion of all theory-based components within the degree that hypnotherapists can move on to the next steps of becoming licensed within their state.
Specific licensing regulations will vary depending on individual state requirements, so it is essential for individuals to conduct their own research that is specific to their own needs. Some states do not require a hypnotherapist to be licensed if they do not claim to diagnose illnesses, conditions or practice medicine. Within other states a hypnotherapist will be required to undergo a licensing process set by their state.
