Become a Licensed Therapist in Psychotherapy

In order to become a psychotherapist, specific higher education is required. At a minimum, a prospective psychotherapist must complete their undergraduate degree in psychology or a closely related field. Once successfully finished, the individual must begin their master’s degree in psychotherapy in order to gain both theory and practical experience in the field. This will be necessary to gain the clinical experience that is needed to become a fully licensed psychotherapist. In order to successfully complete a master’s degree, students will have to complete anywhere from 1000-2000 initial hours of experience, and a further 1500 hours of supervised experience upon completion of their master’s degree in order to become licensed.

Once a psychotherapist is fully qualified, they will be required to complete ongoing education each year to ensure they remain up to date in their knowledge.
